Seeing this dance form while living in Morocco as a child and then visiting Greece and Turkey as an adult, El Naar Haninah has been fascinated with North African and Middle Eastern Dance for as long as she can recall. She has spent the past fifteen years studying, performing recently instructing Middle Eastern dance. An Algerian friend describes El Naar’s dance style as Egyptian with a Maghrebi (North African) twist. Those familiar with Central Asian Dance may recognize El Naar's incorporation of its feminine arm and hand movements within her dance style.
El Naar Haninah served as President of the Washington Mid-East Dance Association (Wameda) from 1999-2000 and has been one of the instructors at the annual Wameda Ethnic Workshop for years of 2001, 2002 and 2003.
From 1996-2001 she was a member of the Silk Road Dance Company,
a professional dance troupe specializing in the dances of Central Asia and the Middle East.
From 1996-2001 she was a regular restaurant performer, performing 2-4 nights weekly.
She currently teaches three levels of The Joy of Middle Eastern Dance for EveryBODY through city of Gaithersburg. Instruction includes dance technique, culture and history, musical and personal expression, cabaret and folkloric styles, choreography.
